Windows 10 build 10525
Microsoft has kept its word and released a new preview
build for insiders in the fast ring with revision number 10525. If you were not
a part of the insider program and would like to join now you can do so. You can
install this preview from windows update only if you have a valid license key
or an upgrade from a valid windows 7/8/8.1 volume. Moreover, you have to opt
into the program by going to “Settings, Update, Advanced Options-Get insider
builds.”
The changes
Microsoft is reporting three major changes with the build, the
ability to control more color options for the start, action center, task
bar and title bars. Yes, you can finally change the color of the title bar
phewks. Personally I didn’t like the plain white or grey title bars in windows
10 so that’s a welcome change right there.
The other major change with this build is a new memory management
feature that seeks to make windows 10 more snappy. According to Microsoft, when
the system is running low on memory, windows 10 will automatically compress
unused “pages” instead of writing them to the disk. This is an advantage since
fetching compressed data from RAM is way faster than fetching it from the disk
even if you are on an SSD drive. This will also allow windows 10 to keep more
applications in RAM.
Issues
Well this build is not without its issues, one I really have
a problem with, the inability to use mobile hotspot. According to Microsoft,
this build will not be able to use mobile hotspot internet because it will not
resolve an IP address from your connection. Hopefully you can get around this
by tethering with USB, but I am yet to download and test it out.
The second issue, though not major has to do with the Movies
and TV app. The statement in part reads “an update to Movies and TV application
from the store will be required to fix an issue with video playback.” Yeah,
most people should be using VLC by now, if not download it. However, it’s still
a nice app to have.
The last issue with the build is that optional language
packs will not work. You can read the entire statement from Microsoft by following
this link.
Final thoughts
If you ask me, those are pretty small bugs for the fast ring
insiders. I will be testing this build today and tomorrow and another blog post
will be up to explain any other changes that may be there but announced by
Microsoft. I imagine performance should be improved, not that it isn’t with the
current build-10240. For those curious, my system configuration is: Lenovo T420
core i5 2410M, 8gb of RAM and 1TB hard disk. Everything runs smoothly except
for the occasional audio crackling issue and the receding task bar. The receding
task bar fixes itself when the start menu is activated. Does anyone else
experience this-the audio issue- or is it just me? Let me know in the comments
below.
