High resolution audio, a scam or a necessity?

Image
Eleven months have quickly gone by and once again, we are in the festive season. Let me take this early opportunity to wish my readers a wonderful festive period. For tech enthusiasts like me, CES 2014 is only a few weeks away and I know you can’t wait to see what faster, thinner and more efficient ways tech companies have come up with to steal money from us. I don’t know how many of you have heard of the term High Resolution Audio (HRA) but apparently, it’s the next big thing in the audio industry. The term High Resolution Audio refers to a new audio compression technology that seeks to provide better quality audio. Without going to the nitty-gritties, the tech seeks to improve the quality of sound from our digital music players by increasing the sampling rate and consequently the bit rate of audio signals from our digital audio players. For you to better understand this, it’s good to have some background knowledge about the analog to digital conversion process. To put it s...

TECNO Phantom A Review

Image
First Impressions The first thing one notices about the TECNO phantom A is its huge screen. It comes with a five inch 1280 by 720 screen which is a catch for those who love huge phones. The screen is sufficiently clear and sharp compared to similarly priced phones. However, on unlocking the phone, one notices considerable lagging which does not go away. Somehow after fitting this phone with a 1 GHz dual core processor and 1 GB of RAM, TECNO forgot to include a reasonable graphics processor. The phone barely manages to run android Jellybean 4.1.1. It lags in many places including navigation and launching applications. Just for comparison purposes, the galaxy S, a phone produced way back in 2010 with a 1 GHz single core processor and 512MB of RAM can comfortably run Jelly Bean, smoothly and with no lags. This means that the Phantom A lacks a good graphics processor to manage graphics intensive applications, including the OS (Jelly Bean). The next thing one notices about the phone is i...

The Near Future of Mobile Phones (SAMSUNG)

Image
Now that, the galaxy s4 is out, and it is the fastest phone ever, I am left wondering what the future trend for mobile phones is going to be. Samsung has played out pretty much everything in the market, it has the biggest phones, the lightest phones, the fastest phones, the phone with the best camera on a mobile device and arguably phones with the best displays. This leaves other phone manufacturers with no option but to up their game and make phones that will at best, compete with Samsung flagship models. The fact that Samsung keeps upgrading their phones to unimaginable levels presents many advantages and some disadvantages too. The advantages are clear and truly welcome. No one minds having a phone with the best screen, 8 cores for unrivalled processing power and the best camera. The problem with this is that Samsung does not make it easy for their competitors and I am pressed to say, even themselves to survive in the industry. Thanks to the awesome Galaxy S4, it is now quite di...

The Galaxy s4 Rumor Mill So far

Image
I would like to start by urging my fellow Kenyans to maintain peace during the forthcoming elections. The elections are here with us and the political mood in the country is at its highest. Nevertheless, we Kenyans expect to have a peaceful election as long as both the top candidates accept the outcome of the elections. Politics aside, news is streaming in fast about the much anticipated galaxy s4. For most people this should be good news but indications and insider scoops are suggesting a rather different phone from what the initial rumors suggested. Below is the rumor breakdown and a brief overview of what to expect from the next android flagship device from Samsung. No Super-Amoled? I can proudly declare (whether it’s true or not) that I was among the first bloggers to propel rumors about the galaxy s4. Well it’s been almost three months but we all know that’s like 3 years in the Tech World. So as usual, the rumor mill about the upcoming galaxy device is still on but we still do...
